Military troops seized a high-powered firearm of the Abu Sayyaf Group following a fierce gun fight in Barangay Bungkaong, Patikul Sulu at 5:38pm yesterday (December 7).
Elements of the 21st Infantry Battalion heavily engaged about 30 Abu Sayyaf members under Almujer Yadah, resulting in the seizure of an M14 rifle, three magazines, and a bandolier left by the fleeing Abu Sayyafs.
Said armed engagement ensued for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, adjacent units provided fire support and reinforced the engaged troops.
Responding troops further extricated one wounded soldier, identified as Corporal Herald T. Marayag.
Marayag was promptly brought to Kuta Heneral Teodulfo Bautista but was pronounced dead on arrival. His remains were ferried by the troops to Zamboanga City at 8:20am today.
“Today, we lost not only a soldier but a brother in arms whose valiant act we shall always remember. Truly, we commiserate with the bereaved families of the late Corporal Marayag, who has given the ultimate sacrifice for peace to thrive in Sulu. On bended knees and with much commitment, we shall continue his legacy and work hard for the defeat of the Abu Sayyaf and the realization of lasting peace and development in Sulu,” said Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, the commander of the Western Mindanao Command.
