President Rodrigo Duterte yesterday ordered security forces to crush Abu Sayyaf militants behind Sunday’s twin bomb attacks on a cathedral in the town of Jolo, Sulu.
The Commander-in-Chief issued the order during his brief visit to military and police forces at the headquarters of the 11th Infantry Division, Philippine Army in Bus-bus, Jolo, Sulu at around 3pm yesterday.
Accompanied by Davao Mayor Sara Duterte and top security officials, the President inspected the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Barangay Walled City.
Infuriated by the blast’s aftermath, Duterte said: “I order you to destroy the organization. I order you now, pulpugin niyo ang Abu Sayyaf by whatever means.”
The twin bombs left at least 20 dead and 102 wounded in Jolo town.
President Duterte conferred the Order of Lapu-Lapu and the Wounded Personnel Medal on soldiers wounded in the said blast.
Families of the killed civilians were also given financial assistance by the President.
Duterte was accompanied by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana; DILG Secretary Eduardo Año; General Benjamin Madrigal, Jr., the AFP Chief of Staff; Director Oscar David Albayalde, the PNP Chief; Lieutenant General Arnel Dela Vega, the commander of the Western Mindanao Command; and former Governor Abdusakur Tan.
