Naval Forces Western Mindanao commander Rear Admiral Rene V. Medina spearheaded the donning of ranks and awarding to the sailors and marines of the said unit on Monday, February 4, 2019.
Bronze Cross Medal was awarded to the troops of the Marine Battalion Landing Team 11 and 83rd Inshore Boat Company, Inshore Boat Battalion for the successful conduct of raid operation last November 23, 2018 which led to the neutralization of Alias Abu Nibras, a known Abu Sayyaf Group-Basilan Based Bomb maker, who was behind the Lamitan bombing incident last July of the same year.
Members of the Seaborn Patrol Unit of Naval Station Romulo Espaldon were also accorded with Bronze Cross Medal for the successful search and rescue operations to the victims of a distressed motor banca in Maasin, Zamboanga City last October 20, 2018 while the officers and men of Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu were awarded with Military Merit Medal for the security assistance provided during the Bangsamoro Organic Law (BOL) Plebiscite on January 21, 2019.
Military Merit Medal was also given to the officers, enlisted personnel, and civilian employees of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao for attaining the highest rating among other Naval Operating Forces during the conduct of the Annual General Inspection.
Further, the members of the Basketball and Volleyball Teams of the command received Military Commendation Medal for participating and winning as 1st Runner up in Basketball and Champion in Volleyball Women during the Inter-Government Agency Basketball and Volleyball tournament organized by the Office of the City Mayor of Zamboanga held from October, 2018 to January, 2019.
In his message, Rear Admiral Medina the commended the newly promoted sailors and marines as well as the awardees for their exemplary performances.
He also gave his insights on the recent bombing incidents in Jolo Cathedral and here in Zamboanga City.
“Our Armed Forces strongly condemns this treachery and we in Team NAVFORWEM is doing the best we can to help our operators in the ground in pursuing those perpetrators and prevent the same incident to happen again,” RAdm Medina said.
“Rest assured that the Fleet-Marine Team stays vigilant and on guard at all times,” he added.
