Sailors, marines awarded for successful ops against Abus

Sailors and marines received awards for their exceptional deeds during the flag-raising ceremony held at the headquarters of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao in Bagong Calarian, Zamboanga City on January 7, 2019.

Rear Admiral Rene Medina, the commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, awarded the Bronze Cross Medal to the gallant sailors and marines of the Naval Task Group Sulu/Philippine Marine Ready Force Sulu and BRP Waray for the successful conduct of amphibious operations and focused military operations on Minis Island, Patikul, Sulu last December 13, 2018.

The operation on Minis Island led to the neutralization of seven members of the Abu Sayyaf Group, the arrest of 10 individuals, and the recovery of several firearms and military items.

Rear Admiral Medina also awarded the Military Merit Medal with Spearhead Device to the officers and men of BRP Agta, BRP Juan Magluyan, Naval Special Operations Unit 6 (NAVSOU6), 82nd Inshore Boat Company, and Multipurpose Attack Craft for carrying out naval operations with other fleet-marine units on Minis Island.

The Military Commendation Medal was also given to members of the support elements of the NTG Sulu and the PMRF Sulu.

Naval and marine troops relentlessly conduct focused military and rescue operations and support all military actions to defeat the Abu Sayyaf in Western Mindanao, said Rear Admiral Medina.
